Here we are at the start... - Jared Leto by arthawk87 Here we are at the start... - Jared Leto by arthawk87

Do not use in any way without my written permission!

I FINALLY FINISHED IT ! This drawing took me ages to complete! I'm not entirely satisfied with the outcome, but I guess it's okay. The idea was to get faster at drawing but it turned out to be a hair drawing exercise... however at some point I didn't even look at the hair on the reference pic anymore, I just drew what I thought might look like hair... Plus I decided to leave away his necklace since the thought of drawing it gave me stomache pain.

Actually, during the last few hours I was on the brick of tearing it into tiny pieces and flushing them down the toilet, but I couldn't do it. All those hours would have been wasted!

WIPs:

Time spent drawing: 34 hours and 15 minutes :faint:
Materials used:
- HB mechanical pencil
- HB, 2B, 3B, 5B, 7B and 9B pencils
- kneaded eraser
- blending sticks (and my finger... :disbelief:)
Size: A4
Title: Phrase from 30STM's "Vox populi".

This is one of the most striking images I've seen! The movement captured is sensational and really personifies Jared's personality. The choice of black and white further adds a darkness and mystery to the piece, making the image even more enticing. This piece his highly original, far from your average portrait, screaming style and impact effortlessly. Having also looked at some previous work, your talent is superb, able to capture the personality of a character with such ease. I look forward to viewing further deviations, with the confidence the quality and impact of this piece will be present in your future work; a true artist.

what type of canvas is?

It's not canvas, but some kind of paper (I think it's Extra white, light grain paper for sketching by Canson, 120g/m2). Hope that helps :-).

Might want to make a more subtle watermark my friend; this really obscures the artwork in a negative way :(

I know it makes it ugly, but when I made it sadly that was kinda the point (was mad at some art thief who stole my Screaming Agony drawing so I put big ugly watermarks on all of my favourite drawings). Am not going to change it on those that already have it, though, but I'm making them more subtle now :-).
Anyway, thanks for the comment, I know watermarks are a pain in the butt for everyone who just want to appreciate art.

I think I can see how you were trying to work faster - some roughness in the face, like in the shading around the eyes and eyebrows? The hair looks like the most "refined" part of this, like you spent the most time on that, like you said.

I'm not trying to criticise, and I certainly don't mean this in a bad way - in fact, I think it gives the picture a lot of intensity that I feel wouldn't have been there otherwise. And that's totally in line with the subject; he's just kind of an intense guy!

I'm glad you didn't flush this :)

You're allowed to criticise and since my drawings aren't perfect it would be perfectly okay if you did :-). Thanks for your comment and thoughts on this.

The roughness is also due to the paper (I think I used the 'wrong' side...) and the small size of the reference pic. The part I really rushed through with was actually the torso, I believe you can see it when you know (or even if you don't).

Uhm no, not yet anyway (only what you see in my WIPs folder). I do want to make some tutorials, but I don't know when I have time to since they're so time consuming.

But here are some hair tutorials from other, very talented, deviants:
- Cataclysm-X: [link] and [link]
- Svera: [link]
- jullia-jullia: [link]
I'm sure that if you search some more on dA you'll find other good tutorials how to draw hair.

And here ([link] ) is a great FAQ by Anna-Mariaa on drawing in general. The two things most important for her are 1) practice and 2) draw only what you see (and I totally agree with her).

Hopefully this will help you :-).
