Happy New Year 2012, everybody . My first deviation of this year, right on January 1st . I actually completed this painting yesterday already, but didn't have time to upload it. I was busy watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the extended version! - my New Year's Eve tradition.
I know I've been bitching about not having any time to draw and everything because of my exams, but I haven't drawn in over two months and I was having serious withdrawal symptoms. I'm sure you all have had that before; after too long you start to feel like going mad if you don't take up a pencil and just draw something! The trigger for this painting has actually been Ilojleen. She uploaded this really awesome drawing of Jared Leto last week (-> arthawk87.deviantart.com/favou… and then also showed me her almost finished part of our art collaboration. I haven't even started with my part yet. That's when I decided to do this.
This piece was done entirely in the pauses between learning sessions, so my studies haven't been affected by it. Win-win ! I didn't even have to search for a great reference picture; I have a folder on my computer with pictures I'd like to draw, and this particular has been my favourite one of all for a long time.
It's Jared Leto. I hope his face is recognizable, it's only about 2cm high and done with ink, so not being used to painting with ink - and it being so tiny - I struggled a lot with getting it right. I probably did everything wrong that one could do wrong when working with ink, but I enjoyed it and am pretty pleased with the result (except the hands... I screwed up the hands!). ... He kinda looks like Wolverine on this picture, don't you think ?
Now to the usual bla-bla:
Time: No idea at all Size: 14cm x 19.5cm / 5.51'' x 7.68'' Materials: Acuarela paper from Oxford, 240g/m2 HB pencil for sketching White and black ink from Pelikan Small and medium paint brush Dip pen Reference: found it on tumblr some time ago, can't locate it anymore. Don't know who took the picture, either. Titel: "Into the night" is the first strophe from "Kings and Queens" by 30STM
Aww thank you for mentioning me! Didn't know I inspired you so much! You're sweet
Definitely, it's a nice subject to start a new year with! I must spill the beans and tell you I finished 2012 with JL [the drawing you've mentioned] and also have started 2012 with Jared... my part of our collab is already done! But I won't show it to you until you finish yours, may it be a secret
I admire the fact you've created such a small face with a lot of details! The tattoo on his forearm looks very realistic [as the rest of the painting, but it especially caught my attention]. I love all the shades you've painted with the ink, I think it should be your new "art major", because you rock the socks with this technique! And I like this background with splashes of paint very much When it comes to flaws - which we promised to point out - I don't know what exactly buggs me about his face - a little bit too long nose maybe. But that's all, everything is perfect
And speaking of similarity to Wolverine - yeaah, draw some metal claws in Jared's right hand
You're very welcome ! Yeah, you just totally inspired me to do something arty as well . And btw, damn you for finishing your part of the collab so quickly and so darn brilliantly (I'm just imagining how it must look like finished, since you won't show it to me - which, btw, is totally fine ). I'm done with my exams and am gonna start with my part of the drawing on Saturday, but I'll be away for a couple of days in the beginning of February (I'm going to London with my mom ), but that's just a really short break I'm taking. I'll give 110% and hope to finish it soon!
And aaawww, thanks so much, I'm really happy you like it. You know, I struggled really hard with the face, at some point I even measured it up in order to detect what is wrong. But up to this day I can't put my finger on what isn't correct (I'm not even sure it's the length of the nose), but I agree with you, something is off. But anyway, it was really a lot of fun to do and I'm DEFINITELY gonna keep on painting with ink ! So now you have something to look forward to .
And btw, I can totally see some Wolverin claws in his right hand .
Yeah, I didn't consider the angle when I started this painting... When I got to his face I thought "Oh no, you're never gonna get this right... stop now, while you still haven't invested too much time into it", but somehow... the callenge of getting it right kept me going. And although it still isn't quite right, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out . Happy you like it too, and thanks for the fave
Only 2cm high?? BRAVO!! You did an excellent job! I'm speechless! Of course it looks like Jared - I recognized him right away! I like that you did this one with ink - you're amazing with pencils but now I see you're so proffesional even with ink! You know I admire your works, keep it up!!
